BIOTECHON ‘25


EVENT LAUNCH

The Event Launch with Flashmob held on 5th November 2025 at 1 PM in the Quadrangle marked an energetic and vibrant start to the upcoming departmental activities, bringing students together in a lively display of enthusiasm and teamwork. The flashmob served as a creative promotional highlight, capturing attention and generating excitement across the campus. Through coordinated choreography, spirited participation, and an engaging atmosphere, the launch successfully set the tone for the events that followed, showcasing student unity, creativity, and the dynamic spirit of the department.

INAUGURATION

The inauguration of Biotechon’25 on 17th November 2025 at 9 AM marked the official commencement of the event, with Dean Dr. Sunil S. More inaugurating the program in the presence of all students and faculty members. The ceremony set a formal and inspiring tone, bringing the department together to celebrate innovation, collaboration, and academic excellence. The gathering highlighted the collective enthusiasm of participants and organizers, creating a motivating start to the series of events that followed.


INTERCOLLEGIATE

IDEATHON

Ideathon, held on 21st November 2025 from 9 AM onwards at the Gallery Hall, is an event themed “Fueling The Future of Biotechnology, One Idea at a Time,” coordinated by Dr. Susweta Das with student coordinators Khushi Poddar and Kusuma D, and judged by Dr. Aneesa Fasim (Associate Professor) and Dr. Blessy Baby Mathew (Assistant Professor). The event aims to encourage participants to think creatively and propose innovative biological sciences–based solutions for real-world challenges, providing a platform to conceptualize and present original ideas that blend scientific knowledge with practical applicability. Through engaging presentations focused on innovation, feasibility, and social impact, Ideathon promotes interdisciplinary collaboration, critical thinking, and an entrepreneurial mindset, inspiring students to explore how biotechnology can contribute to sustainability and technological advancement.

MODEL PRESENTATION

Model Presentation, held on 22nd November 2025 from 9 AM onwards at PG-BT, is themed “Integration of Sciences: Bridging Disciplines for Real-World Discovery,” coordinated by Faculty Coordinator Dr. Neha Deora along with Student Coordinators Hasanathul Haziba M and P. Anjali Prabhu. The event encourages participants to conceptualize and design three-dimensional models that demonstrate how multiple scientific disciplines can be integrated to address real-world challenges. Serving as a platform for transforming theoretical knowledge into tangible and application-oriented outcomes, it invites students to present models that highlight innovation, sustainability, and practical relevance. Emphasizing the use of eco-friendly materials, interdisciplinary collaboration, and clear scientific communication, the event promotes creativity, functionality, teamwork, and scientific accuracy, inspiring students to appreciate the role of science in developing everyday solutions and driving technological progress.

FROZEN TRUTH: CRIME SCENE INVESTIGATION

The Frozen Truth,’ held on 21st November 2025 from 1:30 PM to 4:30 PM in the UGBT Lab and B024, was conducted under the guidance of Faculty In-Charge Dr. Kumar Perinbam, with event coordinators Satrasala Trisha, Nithiya S, P. Shreya, and Punitha V. Achar. This crime scene investigation–themed lab event challenged participants to apply analytical thinking, teamwork, keen observation, and forensic reasoning. Centered around a fictional murder mystery involving five scientists—one found dead under suspicious circumstances—the event required participants to use logical deduction, scientific clues, and investigative techniques to identify the killer, determine the cause of death, and uncover the motive, making it an engaging blend of science, mystery, and problem-solving.

SPOT SLIDE SPRINT

Slide Sprint, held on 21st November 2025 (Friday) from 1:45 PM to 4:30 PM in Room B033 (B Block), is an on-the-spot Life Science event coordinated by Faculty In-Charge Dr. Neha Deora along with event coordinators Varsha T. R. and Rajnandini Puri, with judges yet to be decided. This fast-paced competition challenges participants to think quickly, understand scientific concepts deeply, and communicate them clearly under pressure. Participants receive a mystery topic on arrival, prepare a PowerPoint within a limited timeframe, and present it in a concise five-minute talk highlighting key ideas, innovation, and personal insight. Judges assess scientific understanding, originality, clarity, confidence, presentation skills, and the ability to handle spontaneous questions, making Slide Sprint a dynamic event that tests quick thinking, scientific reasoning, and stage presence.

BATTLE OF BITES

Battle of Bites, held on 21st November 2025 from 9 AM onwards at the Canopy Area, A Block, is themed “Wholesome Creations: Ferment, Chill & Milletize!” and coordinated by Faculty Coordinator Dr. Nayana along with Student Coordinators Varshita H, Tejaswini Jantikar, and Sneha S. Tigadikar. This vibrant culinary competition invites participants to explore the intersection of science, creativity, and nutrition by preparing innovative dishes rooted in both tradition and modern food science. The event features three exciting categories—Millet Marvels, emphasizing the nutritional power and eco-friendly value of millets; Fermentation Fiesta, celebrating the science of beneficial microbes in naturally fermented foods; and Fireless Fantasy, challenging participants to craft delicious, wholesome dishes without the use of heat. With themes that highlight originality, health, sustainability, and scientific understanding, Battle of Bites encourages participants to think like chefs and scientists, creating food that tells a story and showcases the art and science of culinary innovation.

CORRIDOR CARNIVALS

The event held on 21st November 2025 from 9 AM onwards at the Canopy Area, A Block, themed “Wholesome Creations: Ferment, Chill & Milletize!”, was coordinated by Faculty Coordinator Dr. Nayana and featured a series of engaging and interactive science-based games for students. The activities included Pictionary: Biotech Terms, where teams had to guess biotechnology, biology, or lab-related terms solely from a teammate’s drawing; Biotech Bingo, in which teams identified science-based clues to complete any five connected spaces and shout “BINGO!”; and Name That Sound (Lab Edition), where participants identified various lab-related sounds to score points. These fun, fast-paced events promoted scientific thinking, teamwork, and quick recall while creating a lively and collaborative atmosphere.

FOOD STALLS

The food stalls held on 21st and 22nd November 2025 added a lively and flavorful element to the event, with students showcasing their culinary skills, creativity, and entrepreneurial spirit by preparing and selling a wide variety of homemade dishes. The stalls created a vibrant marketplace atmosphere where students explored cooking, presentation, teamwork, and customer interaction while offering delicious, affordable, and innovative food options to everyone present. These two days not only encouraged creativity and collaboration but also highlighted the enthusiasm and talent of the students, making the food stalls a memorable and much-enjoyed part of the event.


INTERCOLLEGIATE

INDUSTRIAL VISIT TO BIOZEEN

During the Industrial Visit to BIOZEEN on 17th November 2025, beginning at 10 AM, MSc 3rd semester students were given a guided tour of the facility, where the team explained the working principles of bioreactors and other essential equipment used in bioprocessing. The visit offered students a foundational understanding of industrial-scale operations and provided insight into how various biotechnological processes are executed in real-world manufacturing environments.

MODEL PRESENTATION

Plantopia, held on 17th November 2025 from 1:45 PM onwards in the PG-BT Lab, was organized under the theme “Integrative Models of Crop Pathogen Systems & Implications for Food Security,” with Faculty Coordinator Dr. Ullas Prasanna S and Student Coordinators Meghana (BSc 5th Sem) and Yashaswini HN (BSc 7th Sem), and judged by Dr. Pavithra. The event encouraged participants to design three-dimensional models illustrating plant diseases and their management using biocontrol agents, offering a platform to creatively apply scientific knowledge toward sustainable and eco-friendly plant health solutions. Participants showcased the role of beneficial microorganisms and natural antagonists in pathogen control, emphasizing innovation, scientific accuracy, and environmental responsibility. Through interdisciplinary collaboration, use of sustainable materials, and clear scientific presentations, the event inspired students to connect biotechnology with sustainable agriculture and appreciate the growing importance of biocontrol in advancing eco-friendly crop protection.

BIO-QUIZ

The BioQuiz held on 17th November 2025 from 1:45 PM onwards brought together enthusiastic students to test their knowledge and quick-thinking abilities across various domains of biological sciences. Judged by Dr. Neha Deora and Dr. Kumar Perinbam, the event featured multiple rounds designed to assess conceptual understanding, scientific reasoning, and problem-solving skills in an engaging and competitive format. Through challenging questions and interactive segments, BioQuiz encouraged teamwork, sharpened subject knowledge, and fostered a spirit of healthy competition among participants, making it an exciting and intellectually stimulating part of the day’s events.

FERVERE – Poster presentation

The poster presentation themed “Metabolic Engineering: Redefining Industrial Biotechnology for Enzyme and Compound Innovation,” held at 10 AM under the guidance of Faculty Coordinators Dr. Vineetha and Dr. Nayana, with judges by Dr. Susweta Das Mitra and coordinated by student organizers Ananya Kumari and Meghana, highlighted innovative approaches in industrial biotechnology. The event invited participants to present ideas and research focusing on engineered metabolic pathways, enhanced enzyme production, microbial strain improvement, and sustainable biomanufacturing. Showcasing advances in biocatalysis and large-scale synthesis of valuable industrial metabolites, the session encouraged scientific creativity, technical understanding, and clear communication, emphasizing the immense potential of microorganisms as efficient biofactories for producing industrially important compounds.

PLANT BIOTECHNOLOGY POSTER PRESENTATION

The event held on 19th November 2025 from 2:30 PM to 4:00 PM, themed “Plantopia: Bridging Plant Tissue Culture and Genome Editing in Modern Crop Biotechnology,” took place in the ground floor corridor of SBAS, B-Block, and was organized by Dr. Ullas Prasanna S with student in-charge Hasanathul Haziba M, and judged by Dr. Blessy B. Mathew, Associate Professor, Department of Microbiology, SBAS, DSU. The event encouraged participants to design and present innovative posters showcasing how plant tissue culture techniques can be integrated with modern biotechnological tools such as genome editing to address real-world agricultural and crop improvement challenges. Providing a platform to transform theoretical understanding into practical, research-oriented, and application-driven concepts, the event aimed to inspire creativity, scientific accuracy, and a deeper appreciation for the role of advanced biotechnology in modern plant science.

MEDICAL BIOTECHNOLOGY POSTER PRESENTATION

The event held on 18th November 2025 from 11:30 AM onwards, themed “Pathodynamics: The Kinetic Framework of Disease Mechanisms,” took place in the B-Block corridor under the guidance of Faculty Coordinator Dr. Jayachandra, with student coordination by Yashaswini HN and judging by Dr. Ananth Krishna. The event invited participants to present scientific posters on the molecular pathogenesis of diseases, focusing on the cellular and molecular mechanisms that drive disease onset and progression. Providing a platform to explore pathogen–host interactions and the molecular basis of diagnosis and therapeutic interventions, the event emphasized creativity, clarity, and scientific accuracy. It encouraged participants to integrate concepts from molecular biology, genetics, and biotechnology, enabling them to demonstrate innovation and analytical thinking while showcasing the crucial role of medical biotechnology in understanding disease mechanisms and advancing modern healthcare solutions.

Theme: THE DEFENCE DOSSIER: UNRAVELLING THE IMMUNE SYSTEM

“The Defence Dossier” is an immunology-themed poster presentation event that explores the full spectrum of immune defence — from innate and adaptive responses to hypersensitivity, autoimmunity, immunodeficiencies, cancer immunology, and cutting-edge technologies such as CRISPR-based immune editing, single-cell sequencing, immunotherapies, and organ-on-chip systems. Students present creative, scientifically accurate posters that link core immunological mechanisms to real-world health challenges, demonstrating their understanding, analytical skills, and presentation abilities. The event is coordinated by Dr. Manjushree H. K with student coordinator P. Anjali Prabhu, and judged by Dr. Prakruti P. Acharya, whose expertise in mechanobiology, biomaterials, and sustainable biomedical innovations guides the evaluation of clarity, depth, creativity, and scientific value in each presentation.


CELL KRAFT

BIOQUEST: THE SEARCH FOR NATURAL ESTERASES (SOURCE OF ENZYME HIDING IN EVERYDAY FOOD)

This event engages postgraduate biotechnology students in the exploration and characterization of esterase enzymes sourced from various natural materials. Participants estimate enzyme activity and specific activity using the α-naphthol assay and Lowry’s method, comparing their findings with esterases extracted from mung beans. Each group presents its results through a creatively designed A3 poster featuring methodology flowcharts, data graphs, comparative analysis, and insights into the uniqueness, specificity, and industrial or food-related applications of esterases. Coordinated by Dr. Neha Deora with student coordinators Khushi Poddar and Kusuma D, and judged by Dr. Arpi Dey, the event emphasizes scientific accuracy, analytical skills, and innovative presentation across 21 participating group

FOOD EXHIBITION

The Food Exhibition, featured a creative and competitive showcase of student-prepared millet-based, fermented, and innovative food products. Participants set up stalls to present their dishes, highlighting nutrition, sustainability, and traditional preparation techniques with a modern twist. The event encouraged students to apply scientific understanding to food innovation while demonstrating culinary skills, hygiene, presentation, and creativity. With a competitive spirit and enthusiastic participation, the exhibition successfully promoted healthy eating, and the versatility of millets and fermented foods.

WINE WONDERS

Wine Wonders,” held on 20 November 2025 from 12:30 PM onwards in the PG-BT and UG-BT laboratories, showcased an innovative display of student-crafted wines prepared from a variety of fruits beyond conventional grapes. Guided by Faculty Coordinators Dr. Vineetha M.S. and Dr. Nayana Borah, and organized by Student Coordinators Neha Joshi and Deepa Kamalesh, the event presented a vibrant range of fruit-based beverages highlighting differences in acidity, sweetness, aroma, colour, and overall sensory appeal. Judged by Mr. Rohit Bopanna, the exhibition blended scientific understanding with creativity, allowing participants to explore how fruit composition shapes fermentation outcomes while offering attendees a deeper appreciation of diversity in wine-style preparations.

SUPERSCIENCE EXPO

Introduction of the Event

The SuperScience Expo 2025 was an interactive and science-driven event designed to spark curiosity and promote scientific thinking among students by merging creativity with cutting-edge biological concepts. The event showcased how genetics, gut health, synthetic biology, and human enhancement intersect with everyday lifestyle and future innovations. Through hands-on stalls, demonstrations, creative competitions, and student-run exhibits, the expo aimed to make complex scientific ideas accessible, exciting, and impactful.

Objective of the Event

  • To promote scientific awareness and creativity among students through interactive biology-based activities
  • To connect real-world applications of genetics, gut microbiome, and synthetic biology with student learning.
  • To encourage interdisciplinary thinking and problem-solving through themed activities and competitions.

Brief Description of the event

The SuperScience Expo 2025 was a dynamic celebration of science, creativity, and innovation, featuring two major thematic experiences : The Helix of Heroes and The Great Indian Gut Fest.

Students explored how genetic engineering, molecular biology, and synthetic enhancements could shape future human capabilities. “The Helix of Heroes” engaged participants in designing their own genetically-engineered superheroes based on real biological principles such as CRISPR, epigenetics, and gene-environment interactions.

Meanwhile, “The Great Indian Gut Fest” highlighted the crucial role of gut microbiota in shaping lifestyle, metabolism, and mental well-being. Through interactive stalls and demonstrations, attendees learned how diet, DNA, and microbes interact to influence health. The expo served as both an educational and entertaining platform, successfully bridging fiction with fact, encouraging critical scientific thinking, and generating widespread enthusiasm among the DSU student community.
