Certified Management Accountant(CMA)
US CMA is a professional certification in finance & accounting relevant for success. Achieving the CMA demonstrates professional expertise in financial planning, analysis, control, decision support, and professional ethics – skills that are in demand by organizations around the world. Basically, CMAs can explain the “why” behind numbers, not just the “what”. The CMA degree gives greater credibility, higher earning potential, and ultimately a seat at the leadership table.
CMA is offered by the IMA (Institute of Management Accountants), US, and is a globally recognized, advanced-level credential appropriate for accountants and financial professionals in business. The CMA exams comprise the following two exam parts:
- Part 1 – Financial Reporting, Planning, Performance & Control
- Part 2 – Financial Decision Making
As an integrated program, the US CMA curriculum is covered over Semesters 1-4 (via 5 integrated subjects) and students are encouraged to clear the 2 CMA exam in Semester 4-5 before placements. Candidates who clear the CMA exams are eligible for differential placements with top MNCs in India and abroad.
Why 2 exams for US CMA vs. many exams on Indian professional qualifications?
US professional qualifications mandate a university degree, and given the fact that university education covers a vast majority of the content, the professional exam only focuses on the skill-gaps which are needed for the profession. Therefore, US professional qualifications like CMA / CPA “complement” university education and have lesser number of exams.
To the contrary, Indian professional qualifications (like Indian CA, CMA, CS, etc.) do not require university education. Therefore, these qualifications tend to “substitute” university education and have more exam papers to encompass what a candidate would have covered (or simultaneously covers) in a university degree.
How much does a CMA earn?
CMAs earn 47% more in the U.S. than professionals without the CMA. In fact, a 22-year-old CMA could enjoy more than $500,000 in additional lifetime earnings. More importantly, the certification is a pathway to a more successful business career: one that opens doors, builds confidence, closes skills gaps, and lets you tap into a network of 100,000 professionals around the globe. As our CMAs will tell you, it's an investment that pays a lifetime of dividends and lets you rise above the competition.
The results are in: IMA's Global Salary Survey and third-party studies confirm that CMAs get a career and earnings premium.
- In the U.S., median total compensation is 47% higher for CMAs over peers without the CMA or CPA.
- Globally, the median total compensation is 67% higher for CMAs over non-CMAs.
- A 22-year-old who is not certified would need to work 10 years more to get the same lifetime earnings as a CMA
