Dr. Ganapati Bhat

Assistant Professor

Dr. Ganapati Bhat is currently working as Assistant Professor of Biochemistry at school of Basic and Applied Sciences, Dayanand Sagar University. He has acquired extensive expertise in Cancer-Glycobiology, Glycomics and Glyco-proteomics in addition to protein chemistry, molecular biology and cell biology over the last 11 years of his research career. Dr. Ganapati has received post-doctoral training in Cancer-Glycobiology from Dept. of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, University of Nebraska Medical Center (UNMC), USA (2014-17), where he worked on mechanism of synthesis of Tumor Associated Carbohydrate Antigens (TACAs), particularly in prostate cancer and Golgi targeting mechanism of glycosyl transferases. His findings and Innovations in the field of glycobiology particularly on prostate cancer titled “Methodology for Identification of Aggressive Prostate Cancer” was recognized at the “2017 UNeMed Research and Innovation Awards”, University of Nebraska Medical Center, NE, USA. In addition, he has also been honored with “Outstanding Performance Award for the year 2015”, at Dept. of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, University of Nebraska Medical Center, USA. Later he moved to Complex Carbohydrate Research Center (CCRC), University of Georgia, Athens, GA, USA to expand his expertise in glycobiology. At CCRC, he was part of the professional analytical service and training platform in the area of Glycomics and Glyco-proteomics, which provides both the service based and collaborative carbohydrate analysis package for various industries and universities. In addition to this, he also had worked on several different human clinical samples, parasitic and algal glycoproteins. Dr. Bhat obtained his Ph.D and M.Sc. degree in Biochemistry from Karnatak University, Dharwad, Karnataka, India. His Ph.D work had been focused to identify and characterize the novel plant lectin having unique carbohydrate specificity and evaluation of its biological activity on human and plant pathogens and on human diseases. His work not only addressed the biosafety concerns of producing transgenic insect resistant plants in detail but also had opened up new opportunities to study different human diseases. During his PhD he had been the recipient of Junior Research Fellowship from University Grant Commission (UGC) - Research Fellowship in Sciences for Meritorious Student (RFSMS) and he also had worked as a Senior Research Fellow under the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) funded project, at P. G. Dept. of Biochemistry, Karnatak University, Dharwad, Karnataka, India. Besides, Dr. Bhat has been contributed 11 international research publications, presented at several international conferences including highly reputed EMBO workshop on Glycobiology held at Vico Equense, Italy, and has been the part of the nucleotide sequence submitted to NCBI.
