Dr. Seema Tharannum is a Professor of Biological Sciences at the School of Engineering, Dayananda Sagar University, Bengaluru, with over 30 years of teaching and research experience in biotechnology and environmental sciences. She obtained her PhD in Biotechnology with specialization in Environmental Biotechnology from Kuvempu University, Shimoga, in 2013 under the guidance of Dr. V. Krishnamurthy. She completed her M.Phil. in Biotechnology from Bharathidasan University in 2005 and her M.Sc. in Biotechnology from the University of Mysore in 1995, both with First Class with Distinction. Throughout her academic career, she has been actively involved in teaching undergraduate, postgraduate, and research programs, mentoring students, and contributing to academic administration. She previously served at PES University and PES Institute of Technology in various roles including Associate Professor, Assistant Professor, and Lecturer, and earlier taught at BMS College, Bengaluru, and SN Institute of Dental Sciences, Hassan.
Her research interests include environmental biotechnology, bioremediation of heavy metals, microbial applications, nanobiotechnology, and the integration of artificial intelligence in biological sciences. She has successfully completed funded research projects supported by organizations such as UGC, C-DAC -where the project has ended up in trade mark registry and commercialization of the product under trade name PP solution (PES Pebrine solution) at Institute. She has guided several PhD scholars and postgraduate research students. Dr. Tharannum has published numerous research papers in national and international journals, contributed book chapters, and presented her work at several national and international conferences in India, Malaysia, Dubai, Thailand, Qatar and Singapore. Previously she has experience in serving as Assistant dean- Examinations, coordinator - Indian Red cross wing, IQAC Internal Audit member and organised community development programs.
She is also actively involved in academic and professional bodies, holding memberships in various scientific organizations and serving on Boards of Studies of multiple institutions and chaired many sessions at international and national conferences. She has been invited to deliver guest talks at different levels. Her academic contributions, research supervision, and participation in interdisciplinary initiatives reflect her commitment to advancing education and research in biotechnology and allied fields.
